Glossary: Pine & Polymer Outdoor Furniture

Adirondack (Chair): Adirondack Chairs are any of a variety of Outdoor Chairs made from planks of wood or polymer, often with a rear-sloping Seat, reclined Back and wide, flat Arms. Originating with an early 20th. Century design which became popular in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. Sometimes known by their original name, "Westport Chair", or "Muskoka Chair" in Canada. Bar Height: Describes a Bar Stool or Bar Chair whose Seat is approximately 30" high, or a Bar or Table whose Top Surface is approximately 40" high. Distinguishes a Stool from one of lesser "Counter Height" or "Dining Height".

Chaise Lounge: Derived from the French term "chaise longue" (probably by mistake), meaning "long Chair" -- which is the best description. Originally a type of Daybed which appeared in Victorian parlors or living rooms, "Chaise Lounge" more often refers to a variety of Outdoor Furniture.

Deep Seating: Describes Chairs, Sofas, Sectionals, etc. with Seat Cushions of a certain thickness -- usually more than 5 inches -- as well as related items such as Cushioned Ottomans.

Fully Outdoor: We use this term to distinguish items from ones that are meant for "Semi-outdoor" use. (Semi-outdoor items should not be fully exposed to the elements, and are meant for covered porches, etc.)

Polymer: Technically a type of large molecule found in many natural materials including wood, paper and wool, the term "Polymer" is generally used to refer to almost any synthetic material (effectively a synonym of "plastic"). Most often, it refers to Vinyl or Polypropylene. Many of our Custom Made Wooden Outdoor Furniture items are available in Polymer instead.

Settee: A couch or sofa. In modern use, it is usually one which is less than full-sized and intended for two adults (effectively a synonym of "Loveseat"). The term, more popular in the Southeastern United States, has the same root as the word "settle".
