Glossary: Wicker

Bar Height: Describes a Bar Stool or Bar Chair whose Seat is approximately 30" high, or a Bar or Table whose Top Surface is approximately 40" high. Distinguishes a Stool from one of lesser "Counter Height" or "Dining Height".

Cane (Seat or Chair Back): A woven Furniture componenet made from rigid natural fibers, often Rattan. Originally, caning used one of a group of tall grasses known as "cane". The term "Rush Seat" is used interchangably with "Cane Seat".

Chaise Lounge: Derived from the French term "chaise longue" (probably by mistake), meaning "long Chair" -- which is the best description. Originally a type of Daybed which appeared in Victorian parlors or living rooms, "Chaise Lounge" more often refers to a variety of Outdoor Furniture.

Closed Weave: A Wicker weave with little to no open space incorporated, as opposed to an Open Weave. The primary difference is an aesthetic one, but an Open Weave in Furniture allows air to pass, and traps less body heat.

Compote: A type of dish with a stem or base, usually used for serving fruit, nuts or candy. The word originates in French, has the same root as "composite", and refers to a mixture of fruits stewed in syrup.

Counter Height: Describes a Bar Stool whose Seat is approximately 25" high, usually meant for use at a typical Kitchen Island or counter. Distinguishes it from a "Bar Height" Stool, which is taller.

Fully Outdoor: We use this term to distinguish items from ones that are meant for "Semi-outdoor" use. (Semi-outdoor items, like Rattan Wicker Furniture, should not be fully exposed to the elements, and are meant for covered porches, etc.)

Open Weave: A Wicker weave incorporating more empty spaces than a Closed Weave Wicker feature. The primary difference is an asthetic one, but an Open Weave allows air to pass, and traps less body heat.

Orkney Chair: Traditional Scottish Chair design, featuring a Caned Back and Seat. A type of Orkney Chair called a Warming Chair has a very low seat, for fireside sitting.

Palm Leaf: The fibrous material derived from Palm trees, which, like the Rattan plant, is used to make Wicker Furniture, Baskets, etc.

Rattan: Originally refers to a vine-like Asian plant that produces wood-like and fibrous materials used in caning and wickerwork. Synthetic Rattan, also called Resin Wicker, etc. is a weather-proof alternative. The term "Rattan" is also used interchangably with "Wicker" so that any Wicker item might be called "Rattan" regardless of what its made from. (Our products which are made from the Rattan plant list the single word "Rattan" under materials, as opposed to "Synthetic Rattan" or "PVC Rattan".)

Resin Wicker: A polymer-based material used to make durable outdoor wicker Furniture. Also called "synthetic rattan", among other things.

Rush (Seat or Chair Back): A woven Furniture componenet made from natural fibers, usually rattan. The term "cane" is used interchangably with "rush".

Semi-outdoor: We use this term to distinguish items from "Fully Outdoor" in their intended use. Semi-outdoor Furniture (which includes genuine Rattan Furniture and Non-Speader Bar Hammocks) should not be exposed to rain, snow, direct sun or strong wind, but is suitable for some covered porches, gazebos, etc.

Settee: A couch or sofa. In modern use, it is usually one which is less than full-sized and intended for two adults (effectively a synonym of "Loveseat"). The term, more popular in the Southeastern United States, has the same root as the word "settle".
