Glossary: Hammocks & Hammock Chairs

American Hammock: A term used, especially in Latin America, for Hammocks featuring Spreader Bars (as opposed to Mayan, Brazilian or Nicaraguan Hammocks which are made from Fabric only).

Fully Outdoor: We use this term to distinguish items from ones that are meant for "Semi-outdoor" use. (Semi-outdoor items, such as Non-Spreader-Bar Hammocks, should not be fully exposed to the elements, and are meant for covered porches, etc.)

Non-Spreader-Bar Hammock: A Hammock without bars which hold open the ends of the Hammock. This type, which includes Brazilian, Nicaraguan and Mayan Hammocks, is better suited to sleeping than others. They are considered Semi-outdoor, meaning that they are not meant to be left in the rain or direct sunlight indefinitely.

Semi-outdoor: We use this term to distinguish items from "Fully Outdoor" in their intended use. Semi-outdoor Furniture (which includes genuine Rattan Furniture and Non-Speader Bar Hammocks) should not be exposed to rain, snow, direct sun or strong wind, but is suitable for some covered porches, gazebos, etc.

Spreader Bar (Hammock): Spreader Bars, often wooden, hold the ends of some Hammocks open. These Hammocks, called Spreader Bar Hammocks, or American Hammocks, are better suited to sun-bathing than others, are generally considered "Fully Outdoor" Hammocks, meaning that they can weather sun, rain and wind.
