Glossary: Custom Made Wooden Furniture (Indoor)

Bar Height: Describes a Bar Stool or Bar Chair whose Seat is approximately 30" high, or a Bar or Table whose Top Surface is approximately 40" high. Distinguishes a Stool from one of lesser "Counter Height" or "Dining Height".

Beadboard: A type of Wood Panelling that features regularly spaced grooves, usually, but not always, installed with the grooves running vertically. Originally comprised of single boards fit together in a tongue-in-groove fashion, it is also produced in sheets in which the grooves are merely decorative. The Beadboard look is widely associated with Cape Cod and Cottage Style home and Furniture design. Beadboard features are available on many of our Custom Made Furniture pieces.

Bermuda Shutters: Also called "Bahama Shutters", a type of Shutters with fixed Slats. They are operated by an arm which swings the Shutter out from the bottom, changing the angle of the Slats to suit the weather. Strongly associated with Carribean and Tropical design, they are common in the Florida Keys. We feature many Furniture items with Louvered Panels similar to Bermuda Shutters.

Cane (Seat or Chair Back): A woven Furniture componenet made from rigid natural fibers, often Rattan. Originally, caning used one of a group of tall grasses known as "cane". The term "Rush Seat" is used interchangably with "Cane Seat".

Counter Height: Describes a Bar Stool whose Seat is approximately 25" high, usually meant for use at a typical Kitchen Island or counter. Distinguishes it from a "Bar Height" Stool, which is taller.

Cricket Table: A Side or Occasional Table of simple design, almost always having three Legs. The Table Top is often circular, and there may be a Lower Shelf, which may be triangular. The Cricket Table is similar to the "Cricket Stool", a low Stool also having three Legs. Associated with Colonial, Shaker and Primitive styles. Three-legged items were more common on dirt and crude wooden floors, as they are much easier to position on an uneven surface without wobbling. However, they may have traditionally been given to creaking -- hence the reference to crickets. (Our Cricket Tables don't creak. If they do, let us know.)

Finial: A decorative feature appearing either at the apex of a roof, dome or similar structure, or at the end (usually the top) of a post or pole. Finials of various kinds are found on some Lamps, Bed Posts and Garden Trellises. We also offer a variety of Rooftop Finials, which can appear alone on a House, Cottage or Barn, or in combination with a Cupola.

Huntboard: A type of Sideboard made popular by 19th. Century English "hunt breakfasts", and brought to the American South. Longer and higher than other Sideboards, Huntboards are equipped with drawers and/or cupboards, and often with narrow, tapered legs.

Louver(ed): A Louver is either a window or other opening, or a shutter, comprised of fixed horizontal slats. A item which is louvered features such slats.

Mission (Style): A particular style of Furniture originating in the Southwestern United States in the very early 20th Century and associated with the Arts and Crafts movement. Mission Furniture is distinguished by simple, hand-made design, and frequent use of repeating decorative vertical bars (as seen in the Backs of our Mission Chairs and Bar Stools). The name refers to old Spanish Catholic missions in California, although the connection is indirect.

Palmetto: A sub-group of the Palm tree family. Such a tree (specifically the Cabbage Palmetto) is a symbol strongly associated with the state of South Carolina. Palmetto-shaped cut-outs are available on some of our Custom Made Wooden Furniture.
