Cedar Finishing & Maintenance

***This information is intended as a helpful guildeline. Maintenance may differ depending on product contents, and circumstances.

Western Red Cedar is naturally resistant to weathering and insect damage, and does require a finish. Left alone, it will age to a silvery gray color. However, the grain of the wood will eventually become slightly raised, and darker streaks may appear due to the interaction of the wood resin with the metal hardware.

To avoid these latter effects, a coat of wood sealer (like Thompson's Wood Sealer) is recommended. Wood oils are not recommended for Cedar.

If you wish to preserve the fresh color of the wood, a single coat of semi-transparent or solid stain with a UV inhibitor is recommended. Little to no priming or sanding will be required. Stain will probably have to be re-applied every 3 years or so. Cedar can also be painted, but it is better suited to staining.

Where Cedar will be embedded into the ground, the use of a preservative is highly recommended.
